Iceland
Our total trip duration was 3 nights and 4 days. We highly recommend renting a car, as long as you feel comfortable driving in winter conditions (depending on what time of year you go). Be aware that since Iceland is an island, prices are much higher than any other places in the US. We spent the first night in Reykjavík, and the following 2 nights in the country side town of Husafell to give us the best chance of seeing the northern lights (success!).
Our wardrobe staples consisted of leggings, wool socks, Sorel boots, hats, gloves and puffy warm coats. Our evening attire consisted of chunky sweaters and jeans or leggings. Casual, comfy, and of course WARMTH were our main concerns. By being prepared and bringing these staples, we felt comfortable the entire trip!
WHAT TO DO:
WHERE TO STAY in Reykjavík:
Midgardur by Center Hotels
WHERE TO STAY in Husafell:
Hotel Husafell
WHERE TO EAT in Reykjavík:
WHERE TO EAT in Husafell:
With the population of 10 (yes – 10!), while great for escaping the hustle and bustle of the big city, it gave very limited options for meals. The most practical and appealing option was to take advantage of the hotel breakfast and dinner menus. We recommend:
- Breakfast: Buffet with vegetarian, vegan, and carnivore options
- Lunch: Hotel Bistro with sandwich and snack options
- Dinner: Full menu - our recommendations being mushroom risotto, green salad starter, vegetable soup, and take advantage of the endless bread and Icelandic Skyr butter!
Pro Tip:
When visiting the horse farm, take advantage of the homemade rye bread! It’s absolutely delicious, especially with the Skyr Icelandic butter (if you haven’t noticed, we could have survived off of just bread and butter this whole trip and enjoyed every minute of it). It’s made by placing the homemade bread mix into empty milk cartons, put into a hole in the ground, covered, and left to bake just by the heat of the natural spring water in the surrounding ground. See ‘boot picture image’ below to see what it looks like!
